A True Family Destination

Looking for a pick-up game of basketball or volleyball? How about learning the latest hip hop dance moves or training Fido to behave? Regardless of your interests and hobbies, the High Point Community Center offers a full range of activities and events for individuals of all ages.

The community center reopened its doors in the spring of 2004 following an extensive $3.7 million renovation that added 10,000 square feet of space to the previous building. The revamped center includes a commercial-size kitchen, teen room, child care room, gym, computer room, and resource center.

“We were really limited in space before the renovation,” noted Antoinette Daniel with the Seattle Parks Department. “Our new facilities allow us to offer the community so much more — such as ballet, yoga, art classes and before- and after-school child care.” The center also hosts a number of low-cost activities the whole family can enjoy, including Family Movie Night on the second Friday of each month.

At the entrance of the center — as part of the city’s One Percent for Art program — a sculpture captures images of the Seattle skyline via a camera perched atop a tall pole. Visitors can view the images inside a large cup located on a brightly colored table below. “The artist wanted to emphasize one of the neighborhood’s most important assets — our views,” explained Antoinette.

Now open for more than a year, the Community Center and the new programs it offers are still drawing rave reviews. “The neighborhood’s positive response has been overwhelming,” said Antoinette. “It’s been such a fabulous new amenity for the community.”
